I didn't like reading about the Oberfuhrer and Nelka. I didn't like how she has to let her baby be taken to Germany. I don't like how they steal her baby. I don't like how Gretel's mind is gone and almost gets shot. I don't like how Hansel tells his playmate where the secret hideout is, this whole section just was a huge foreshawdow of many bad things to come.

The part that I really didn't like reading about was when Telek had to go through the village and harm all the "perfect" children....especially when he had to burn the little baby....I don't like how the parents expect Telek to do it even though he did draw the short straw....there is only one parent who saves his son....the rest have Telek do it and then he is still left out of every thing because now they are even more afraid of him even though he saved their children.

I didn't enjoy reading about Sister Rosa. She is a horrible person and I hate that she's so attracted to the Oberfuhrer. She sees all the horrible stuff that he does and she still wants him. She disgusts me. I also didn't like the ending where Hansel was taking his playmate to the secret survival spot. I think this will hurt him in the end and he will end up getting screwed over with no place to hide when he needs it the most.
I did enjoy how attached Magda got to the children. Its obvious that she cares alot about them and I think that she is truly a genuine person. I feel sorry that the town classifies her as a witch, she doesn't deserve that title.

I didn't really like reading all the parts where Telek had to hurt all the kids just so they didn't have to be kidnapped. It was hard to read because of all the things he had to do. In some way you could feel the pain that the kids are going through.

I didn't like how Gretel got raped but I was happy that her stepmother was able to help her. It was sad how the stepmother got killed though. I also didn't like how Telek had to hurt the children that had blue eyes or blonde hair. It was sickening how the parents gave them alcohol first to knock them out and lessen the pain, even though they still felt it. I also didn't like how Hansel told Halina where the secret hideout was. I think Halina will tell on them in the end and the children will get hurt.

I agree with Paige, I believe that this section is a foreshadow for what is about to come later in the novel. However, I did like reading the section and finding out all the bad things that happen to all the characters including Nelka's innocent baby. I liked reading about the wierd obsessions of the SS and Sister Rosa, I don't know how much more out there these two can get.

What I did not like reading in this section was when the Oberfuhrer took the blood from Nelka. I also did not like reading about how Telek was hurting the children. I understand that he was trying to save the children, but that would be a difficult job. I agree with Paige with when Hansel tells the girl where the secret hideout is, it does seem to be foreshadowing for the worst.
What I did like about the story was how all the kids, especially Hansel and Gretel, got to go back and were not taken. It is sad to think that had to happen to them to be able to stay, but atleast they are with their family.

In this section I didn't like reading about how they made Telek Hurt all the little kids that were perfect. I also didn't like how Magda was showing Hansel that little dugout shelter and said he'd probably have to go there soon, like something bad is going to happen. I liked how Nelka and Telek decided they liked each other because there's a very slim chance that her husband is ever coming back, and I think Nelka deserves someone to help take care of her and the baby especially with everything they're going through.

The part that i liked reading the most was when the group of people derail the train and get all the goods. I liked this because they got revenge on some of the soldiers but they have a long way to go

I thought a lot of bad stuff happened in this section that I didn't like reading. I hated that the villagers made Telek be the one to hurt all the children even though they've never really accepted him before. I also didn't like reading about how Gretel got raped, or about how her stepmother died. Also, I didn't like the way Magda was talking when she showed the hideout to Hansel because I think it foreshadows Magda's death.

I liked the fact that Magda has gotten really close to the kids in this section, and I liked the fact that Telek and Nelka got together.

I realy dont like this book because its depressing and gloomy. It was really desterbing when Telek had to cut and burn all the kids in the village. He had to do it because he picked the short straw. If the kids didnt have any cuts or burns on them the SS soldiers would take them away. If any body has feelings about childer this was a very hard part to read

I don't really like this book. It's sad and it's a big Debbie Downer. I really don't like the part when Nelka's baby gets taken away. It makes me really sad because you can tell how much she is hurting. I also don't like how Gretel goes nuts, she was the one I was thinking might make it through this. I do like how attached Magda gets to the children though, I think it's really sweet.

I liked reading about how the examinations for choosing the children failed and they couldn't find any children to take b/c it meant they got to stay with their parents, but I didn't really care for reading about how the Nazis openly spoke about sterilizing Gretel. That's unnecessary to do infront of a child and her brother and care taker... you just don't do that sort of thing. Its unethical, well so is war but still

Everything regarding the war itself and the reactions of the people it affected intrigued me, but the character development between Magda and the kiddies bored me.
